Before and After | Racing a Storm

July 30, 2015

I have never shared a before and after of an image before.  Its a rather daunting task and frankly I have been a little scared to until now.  This image was taken during my final mini session day in Beaufort, South Carolina in May.  I was shooting at Hunting Island State Beach and what seemed to be a beautiful day turned into a stormy evening.  This family’s session was taking place right as the storm was rolling in, the winds were high and the sky was a beautiful smokey blue color.

Since the available light was changing so dramatically so fast and we were literally racing the storm this final shot was under exposed.  I should have dropped my shutter speed but with our session only being 15 minutes to begin with and the storm breathing down our necks it slipped my mind.

Once I got the images into Lightroom, my editing program of choice, I was able to bump the exposure and the warmth of the image to my liking, edit out the top of the pole sticking up from my clients head, and deliver a beautiful image to my client.  Here is the before and after, left is SOOC (straight out of camera) and right is the after.

As you can tell little Evelyn was having a blast!

  3. There truly isn’t a better feeling than impressing your clients when they are disappointed in the weather on the day of their shoot! Great way to showcase what some editing can fix! Beautiful capture!

Wow your edit is gorgeous! I love seeing the clouds in the sky!

  5. Clara says:

Great before and after! I have to do the same thing at the end of some of my sessions when the light just seems to change every 2 seconds. You did a great job in post!

  6. Stephanie says:

Very nice! The storm gave you an AMAZING sky. I love those clouds!

  7. Nina says:

Great job! I love that you are informing your future clients that all of the elements matter in a photo shoot. But as a photographer you are still able to make corrections in post production.
